The secret life of a character pocket
A simple apron pocket can become a tiny stage for an original kitchen creature, provided usefulness comes first.
Start with the pocket’s job
Decide what it must hold and how the wearer moves. A comic face should not hide the opening, weaken a seam or add pieces that catch during cooking. Sketch the practical pocket first, then make its shape part of the character.
Invent from basic shapes
Eyes, teeth and odd proportions can produce hundreds of personalities without copying a known cartoon. Give the creature a kitchen role, such as guarding spoons or looking alarmed by washing-up, and build an original palette around that story.
Make it washable
Ask a maker how the base fabric and decoration should be washed, and keep heat or food-safety requirements in mind for the intended use. This editorial page does not recreate the old named apron and no product is currently offered for sale.
