Science hoodies | Operation Acoustic Kitty hoodie
This Operation Acoustic Kitty hoodie is a funny lightweight geeky hoody that references a genuine CIA project from the 60's, where they attempted to train cats to be spies.
As crazy as it sounds, the project alluded to on this Operation Acoustic Kitty hoodie actually happened! Well, they tried at least, but the project was unsurprisingly a resounding failure.
Ignoring historical warnings such as the well-known phrase "it was like herding cats" to describe a near-futile situation, the CIA actually implanted a microphone into a cat's ear, a transmitter at the back of its neck, and connecting wires beneath the fur, with the intention of getting the cat to eavesdrop on conversations behind the Iron Curtain - a situation so surreal we decided it was worthy of being immortalised in the form of this Operation Acoustic Kitty hoodie.
There are two contradictory reports of how the project illustrated on this Operation Acoustic Kitty hoodie ended.
In a 1995 BBC documentary, former special assistant to the Deputy Director of the CIA Victor Marchetti stated that Acoustic Kitty's first operation was to spy on a conversation between two men in a park outside the Soviet compound on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington D.C., but after the cat was released nearby it wandered across a road and was killed by a taxi almost instantly.
A second report in 2013 by Robert Wallace, a former Director of the CIA's Office Of Technical Service, stated that the project was abandoned due to the difficulty in training a cat to behave as required, and so the equipment was taken back out of the cat, which then went on to lead a full and happy life.
Sure it did. ;-)
