How to brief an original geeky T-shirt or clothing design
A practical method for preparing an original, rights-aware clothing brief, with room for related technology themes and accessories.

Define the wearer and garment
State who will wear the item, when it will be used and whether the style should be subtle or bold. Record the garment type, fabric, fit, colour, size quantities and acceptable alternatives. For related tech accessories, record the exact product and compatibility requirements separately.
Choose one readable idea
Decide what should be noticed first. An original line, diagram, symbol or technical joke is often clearer than several competing references. Ask the decorator for the available area and the limits of the intended print or embroidery method before finalising detail.
Record artwork sources and permission
List the creator and source of each image, font and graphic element. GOV.UK explains that using somebody else’s copyright, trade mark or design can require permission. Keep licences or written permission with the project and confirm that they cover the intended product use.
Approve the garment, proof and timing
Check the actual garment specification, spelling, placement, colours and artwork version. Agree whether approval uses a digital proof, decorated sample or pre-production item. Confirm production and delivery dates, and keep the approved proof and order record.
